The heart of beautiful, successful cities is often due to the efforts of volunteers; individuals who love their community and want to be an essential part of making it a fun and delightful place to live and work. Planning and participating in community events permits families to enjoy their neighbors and each other without having to travel long distances. Families taking part in programs such as Adopt-A-Spot take pride in knowing they have beautified a portion of the city they call home. Members of boards, commissions, and councils spend much of their time making decisions that will affect residents and visitors for many years to come. There’s no pay for these jobs – just the satisfaction of knowing you have contributed to “your” community.
The Draper Community Events and Volunteerism Council was organized to act as a steering committee and advisory council to the City regarding coordination, planning and resourcing of community events. The Council identifies needs and opportunities for volunteer service and encourages citizens to volunteer for community based events, boards, and other involvements. A few of the events the Events and Volunteerism Council assists in organizing are Draper Days, Miss Draper Scholarship Pageant, and holiday celebrations related to Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and Independence Day.
The Events and Volunteerism Council is very diversified, with approximately 15 members representing Draper City Arts Council, Draper City Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee, Draper City Youth Council, Draper Area Chamber of Commerce, Draper Community Foundation, each of the Neighborhood Associations, and a Draper City administrative representative, currently the Neighborhood Information Coordinator. Additional members with experience or specialized knowledge in planning, organizing, budgeting or communications are recruited to the committee whenever possible.
In the past year the Events and Volunteerism Council has been very successful in organizing a community volunteer database. The database has been compiled from volunteer applications submitted by Draper residents. Residents indicate on the application how much time they have to volunteer, what types of projects are of interest to them, and what times are best for them to participate. When events are planned, or other non-profit groups need assistance, they match volunteers in the database with the interests they have indicated.
If you would like to become a Draper volunteer, please fill out a Draper Community Spirit application. These are available at City Hall, by just clicking here, or by visiting www.drapercommunity.org.
